An overwhelming majority of the Maldivians profess Islam, in fact, Islam has been the way of life here for more than 800 years now. Their main language is Dhivehi, which has intermingled with Arabic, Hindi and English to produce a harmonius linguistic blend. In most of the schools English is used as the medium of instruction. A majority of the people can converse in English.
