Population Facts
The total population of Maldives is more than 3 million, a third of whom live in Male’, the capital city. As you walk down the streets in Male’ you will be astonished to discover that more than 50% of the population is under 15 years of age.

Religion and Language
An overwhelming majority of the Maldivians profess Islam, in fact, Islam has been the way of life here for more than 800 years now. Their main language is Dhivehi, which has intermingled with Arabic, Hindi and English to produce a harmonius linguistic blend. In most of the schools English is used as the medium of instruction. A majority of the people can converse in English.

Marriage is a simple affair and so is the fact of divorce- the divorce rate is exceptionally high in Maldives. Owing to the shortage of housing people live in extended families and the newly married couples generally move into a room either in the bride’s or the groom’s house.
