Population Facts
The total population of Maldives is more than 3 million, a third of whom
live in Male, the capital city. As you walk down the streets in Male
you will be astonished to discover that more than 50% of the population is
under 15 years of age.
Religion and Language
An overwhelming majority of the Maldivians profess Islam, in fact, Islam
has been the way of life here for more than 800 years now. Their main
language is Dhivehi, which has intermingled with Arabic, Hindi and English
to produce a harmonius linguistic blend. In most of the schools English is
used as the medium of instruction. A majority of the people can converse in
English.
The Social Milieu
Post- modernism has made giant inroads into the social fabric of Maldives-
in every facet of life you will find an intricate blend of tradition and
modernity. The people are hardworking and yet unhurried; you will smell a
deep sense of respect even in their most playful mood. Education is the
first preference of everyone and perhaps this is the reason why 98% of
Maldivians are literate. Every citizen has the opportunity to play his part
in the economic life of the nation. Women are held in high esteem and you
will come across many a woman holding key positions in the government.
Marriage is a simple affair and so is the fact of divorce- the divorce rate
is exceptionally high in Maldives. Owing to the shortage of housing people
live in extended families and the newly married couples generally move into
a room either in the brides or the grooms house.
Soccer and water sports are the way of life in Maldives. They resort to
tennis, cricket and badminton as well.
